Rena

The title says everything: Rena Goddess of Pollution. This painting is named after the ship on the Astrolabe reaf in Tauranga.

I did this completely intuitively and I was just amazed what one’s mind can produce. She is like a mermaid in a beautiful blue dress with shiny round fins at the end, surrounded by the fish of the reef, and below this beauty is the gruesome reality of the screaming red faces of the people of New Zealand. On her right there is a baby dolphin, now black with oil,  representing the ugly truth about the pollution and oil spills on our beautiful New Zealand coast. Shiny bits on the lower part of the painting represent waste thrown into the ocean, like plastic bags.On the left side of the painting are purple lines which represent the oil spillage.

Interestingly enough Rena in french means rejuvenation.

I decided to add this painting to the exhibition even if it is completely something different from the theme of the exhibition. I guess this might be leading me into something else in the future. More about the exhibition on my blog below.
